Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis that involves crystal formation within the joint fluid. These crystals can cause swelling, heat and reddening around the affected joint, which usually starts in the great toe joint. The pain from this type of arthritis starts quickly, often flares up at night, and can be excruciating.

Treatment options include oral non-steroidals, colchicine, cortisone injections, and dietary changes. Patients with gout should also be seen by their primary care doctor for long-term management of this systemic disease.
