Live Confidently with PrEP

PrEP is a daily medication that helps prevent HIV for people who are at higher risk for contracting HIV. Whether your risk comes from sex or injection drug use, PrEP can be an effective tool in protecting your health. Studies show that taking PrEP as prescribed can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by up to 99% from sexual activity and at least 74% from injection drug use.

Why Take PrEP?

If you are HIV-negative but at risk of exposure to HIV infection, PrEP offers a proactive way to prevent HIV from taking hold in your body. PrEP is especially useful if:

PrEP is safe for most people and can provide peace of mind, helping you live confidently without fear of HIV.

Is PrEP Safe?

Yes! PrEP has been approved by the FDA and is considered safe for long-term use. Side effects are generally mild and may include nausea, headaches, and fatigue. Most of these symptoms disappear over time. If you experience side effects that bother you or don’t go away, let your healthcare provider know.

PrEP is only for people who are HIV-negative, so you’ll need to get tested before starting the medication. Ongoing use requires regular follow-up appointments and HIV testing every three months to ensure that it’s still the best choice for you.

Is PrEP Covered by Insurance?

Under the Affordable Care Act, most health insurance plans are required to cover PrEP at no cost to you. This means your PrEP medication, clinic visits, and lab tests should all be fully covered. For those without insurance, Healthy Connections offers a sliding fee scale based on household income to make PrEP accessible and affordable.
