World Hepatitis Day: What You Don’t Know Could Hurt You

Every July 28, we recognize World Hepatitis Day—a global effort to raise awareness of hepatitis and the people affected by it. More than 350 million people worldwide live with viral hepatitis, and many don’t even know they have it.

At Healthy Connections, we believe that early detection, education, and support are the keys to long-term health. We offer confidential, judgment-free testing for hepatitis A, B, and C—and HIV—at our clinics across Arkansas. Protecting your liver starts with knowing your status.

What Is Hepatitis—and Why Does It Matter?

Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver, most often caused by a virus. The three most common types are:

  • Hepatitis A – Spread through contaminated food or water. It is short-term and preventable with a vaccine.
  • Hepatitis B – Spread through blood, sexual contact, or from mother to child. It can become chronic but is preventable with vaccination.
  • Hepatitis C – Spread primarily through blood-to-blood contact (like sharing needles). It often causes no symptoms until liver damage occurs—but it is now curable with treatment.

Many people with hepatitis may feel fine for years. But behind the scenes, liver damage may be progressing. Left untreated, chronic hepatitis B or C can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer. Early testing can change the outcome.

Who Should Get Tested?

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Have used IV drugs or shared needles—even once
  • Received a blood transfusion before 1992
  • Have had unprotected sex with multiple partners
  • Were born between 1945 and 1965
  • Live with someone who has hepatitis
  • Work in healthcare or correctional facilities

Even without symptoms, you could have hepatitis or HIV. At Healthy Connections, testing is fast, confidential, and stigma-free. We offer rapid testing options for HIV and Hepatitis C at many locations.

What Happens if You Test Positive?

If you test positive for Hepatitis C, we guide you through every step:

  • We begin with additional testing to assess your liver’s condition
  • Based on your needs, we create a personalized treatment plan, typically involving an 8- to 12-week course of medication
  • We provide follow-up lab visits and support to ensure treatment success

We also offer supportive care for patients with HIV, including education, counseling, and long-term care coordination when needed. Our goal is to help you thrive, not just survive.

Hepatitis A & B Vaccines Also Available

Prevention is powerful. Healthy Connections offers vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B, protecting you and your loved ones from infection. Ask our providers if you’re eligible to receive them during your visit.

Care That Meets You Where You Are

With clinics in Hot Springs, Mena, Malvern, Little Rock, Russellville, and other communities across Western and Central Arkansas, we’re here to make care accessible. We accept Medicaid, Medicare, most insurance plans, and offer a sliding-fee scale for uninsured patients who qualify.

Our providers deliver expert, compassionate care in a supportive environment where every patient matters.

Take Action on World Hepatitis Day

Here’s how you can protect yourself and others:

  • Get tested for hepatitis and HIV—especially if you are at higher risk
  • Get vaccinated for Hepatitis A and B if you haven’t already
  • Avoid risky behaviors, such as sharing needles or unprotected sex
  • Talk to a provider about treatment options if you’ve tested positive

Early detection makes all the difference. The sooner you act, the better your chances for full recovery and long-term health.
