World Patient Safety Day: Putting Safety at the Heart of Care

Did you know that one in ten patients worldwide experiences harm while receiving care — and most of it is preventable? That’s why each year on September 17, World Patient Safety Day, healthcare providers around the globe pause to raise awareness about one of the most important aspects of medicine: keeping patients safe.

At Healthy Connections, patient safety isn’t something we highlight once a year. It’s the foundation of every appointment, every procedure, and every service we provide across Arkansas. Whether it’s a routine wellness exam, a child’s school physical, a dental cleaning, or a behavioral health visit, your safety guides the way we deliver care. And this #WellnessWednesday, we want to give you the tools to play an active role in protecting your health.

Why Patient Safety Matters

Patient safety is more than just preventing mistakes. It’s about building a healthcare environment where risks are reduced, communication is clear, and patients feel informed and empowered. According to the World Health Organization, millions of patients are harmed globally each year by unsafe care — but most of those harms can be avoided.

As a Federally-Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Healthy Connections is committed to meeting the highest standards of safety. That means our teams in Mena, Hot Springs, Malvern, Little Rock, Sheridan, De Queen, and beyond follow evidence-based practices and work together to protect every patient who walks through our doors.

How Healthy Connections Keeps Patients Safe

Because we provide care across so many specialties, safety looks different in every setting:

  • Primary Care: Our providers review prescriptions to prevent drug interactions, monitor chronic conditions with regular checkups, and use preventive screenings to identify risks early.
  • Pediatrics: From safe immunization practices to growth monitoring and parent communication, our pediatric team ensures children get the right care at the right time.
  • Women’s Health: Safe prenatal visits, screenings, and reproductive health services are guided by careful protocols and open dialogue with patients.
  • Dental Services: Our dental teams follow strict infection-control standards, safe anesthesia practices, and provide education to keep patients informed.
  • Behavioral Health: Mental health conditions, when left untreated, can create safety risks. Our licensed therapists and psychiatric providers coordinate with medical teams to deliver safe, effective care.

Patient safety is not one-size-fits-all. By tailoring strategies to each service line, we give patients peace of mind that their care is not only compassionate but also safe.

Five Ways Patients Can Stay Safe This #WellnessWednesday

Healthcare is a partnership, and this #WellnessWednesday is the perfect time to take action. Here are five steps you can take to protect yourself and your family:

  1. Ask Questions: If you don’t understand your care plan, prescription, or test results, ask until you do.
  2. Track Medications: Keep a current list of all medications, including over-the-counter and supplements, and share it with your provider.
  3. Stay on Schedule: Preventive checkups, screenings, and cleanings help catch small issues before they become serious.
  4. Follow Instructions: Sticking with treatment plans reduces complications and improves outcomes.
  5. Be Honest: Always tell your provider about new symptoms, lifestyle changes, or anything that could affect your health.

Taking an active role doesn’t just make you an informed patient — it makes you a safer one.

Your 24-Hour Safety Game Plan

If you’re ready to start today, here’s a simple daily checklist:

  • Morning: Take medications exactly as prescribed. Double-check dosage.
  • Midday: Drink water and eat balanced meals to support overall wellness.
  • Afternoon: Write down new symptoms or side effects.
  • Evening: Review your medication list for accuracy.
  • Before Bed: Prepare questions for your next provider visit.

These small habits, repeated daily, help build a culture of safety that extends beyond the clinic and into everyday life.

Patient Safety in Action

At Healthy Connections, our providers and staff live this mission every day. From the receptionist who double-checks your information, to the dental hygienist who explains your treatment, to the behavioral health therapist who coordinates with your physician, patient safety is woven into every part of your visit.
