Healthy Connections proudly announces that Misty Surber and Carrie Ray, Family Support Specialists with Healthy Families Arkansas (HFA), have been selected as recipients of the 2026 UAMS Doula Expansion Initiative Scholarship Program Award. This competitive statewide scholarship covers the full cost of a certified doula training program through the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Institute for Community Health Innovation, expanding maternal and family support services throughout Arkansas.
The scholarship supports professionals who will serve families during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period—especially in areas where access to maternal support services is limited.
Expanding Support for Families Across Arkansas
Misty and Carrie work within Healthy Connections’ Healthy Families Arkansas program, which provides free home visiting services and family-centered support to first- and second-time moms in Polk and Garland counties. HFA helps families build on their strengths by offering:
- Education on child development and positive parenting practices
- Support navigating healthcare and community systems
- Assistance with Medicaid, WIC, and other essential services
- Transportation to prenatal and well-child care appointments
- Goal planning for education, employment, and independent living
- Crisis intervention and resource connections
These services are available at no cost and continue until a child reaches age three. HFA is part of a national, evidence-based home-visiting model shown to support healthy parenting and early childhood development.
A Meaningful Opportunity to Serve
For Misty, the scholarship represents both professional growth and a deeper connection to families in her community.
“This opportunity means the world to me. I can’t wait to gain the skills and training to better support the families in our community through pregnancy, birth, and beyond. I am incredibly grateful for this scholarship and for everyone who has encouraged me along the way. Here’s to new beginnings, growth, and making a difference—one family at a time.”
Carrie emphasized how the certification will expand her ability to support parents throughout their journey.
“I am honored and thrilled to share that I have been selected for the UAMS Doula and Lactation Consultant Expansion Program! Through these certifications, I will be able to take my support for families to the next level—providing care before and after birth and now being present in the delivery room. This opportunity allows me to deepen my commitment to empowering parents and ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.”
Strengthening Healthy Connections’ Mission
Doulas play a vital role in maternal health by providing continuous emotional support, advocacy, and education during labor, delivery, and the postpartum period. Their work improves birth experiences, supports breastfeeding, and enhances maternal mental health—outcomes that reflect Healthy Connections’ commitment to Community, Compassion, and Excellence.
Misty and Carrie’s expanded training and certifications will strengthen family support services across Healthy Connections’ service area in Arkansas, deepening the organization’s capacity to support families through one of life’s most critical transitions.
