2026 Polk County Dental Sealant Project Underway to Protect Local Students’ Smiles

Healthy Connections is proud to once again partner with the University of Arkansas–Fort Smith Dental Hygiene Program for the 2026 Polk County Dental Sealant Project. This annual initiative brings preventive dental care directly to elementary and middle school students across Polk County, helping protect young smiles and reduce the risk of cavities before problems start.

The first round of school visits took place on February 19, and the project will conclude on February 26. We are officially halfway through this year’s effort, and we are grateful for the continued commitment of our dental team and the UAFS dental hygiene students who dedicate their time and expertise to serve local families.

This year’s project provides dental sealants and fluoride varnish treatments to 2nd–6th grade students in the Mena School District, Ouachita River School District, and Cossatot River School District. Schools served include Wickes, Oden, Umpire, Van Cove, Acorn, Louise Durham, Holly Harshman, and Mena Middle School. If participation demand remains high, additional accommodations will be made whenever possible.

Why Sealants Matter

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth—where cavities most often develop. These grooves can trap food particles and bacteria, making them difficult to clean even with good brushing habits. Sealants act as a barrier, helping prevent decay before it starts.

Fluoride varnish is also provided during the project. This quick, effective treatment strengthens tooth enamel and adds another layer of cavity protection.

It is important for parents to know that sealants and fluoride do not replace daily brushing and flossing. Instead, they serve as added protection to reduce the likelihood of cavities and the need for more extensive dental treatment later.

Supporting National Children’s Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of good oral hygiene habits from an early age. Preventive programs like the Polk County Sealant Project align directly with that mission—bringing care to children where they are and helping families stay ahead of dental issues.

If Your Child’s School Is Not Participating

Families whose schools are not part of the program can still take advantage of preventive dental services by contacting Healthy Connections directly. Our dental teams in Mena and Hot Springs provide comprehensive services, including exams, cleanings, sealants, restorative care, and more.

Healthy Connections Dental is open 7:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. We accept Medicaid, ARKids 1st, and are in network with most dental insurance plans. A sliding fee scale is available for qualifying patients without insurance.

Community in Action

The Polk County Dental Sealant Project reflects what community partnership looks like in action. We are thankful for our dental staff who coordinate and deliver care, and for the UAFS dental hygiene students who gain hands-on experience while serving local children. Together, we are working to ensure students in Polk County have the preventive care they need to maintain healthy smiles for years to come.
