Healthy Connections Continues to Lead the Way in Children’s Dental Health

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and Healthy Connections is once again making a lasting impact on the oral health of children in Polk County. Over the past two weeks, nearly 100 children received free dental sealants and fluoride treatments as part of our annual Polk County Dental Sealant Project. This initiative underscores our commitment to preventive dental care and our dedication to ensuring that children have access to essential oral health services.

A Commitment to Community Dental Care

Healthy Connections has been a trusted provider of high-quality dental services in Polk County for more than 25 years. As a Federally-Qualified Health Center (FQHC), we prioritize accessibility and affordability, offering comprehensive dental care to children and families across the region. Our annual dental sealant program is designed to prevent cavities and promote long-term oral health for school-aged children.

Thanks to the support of local school districts—including Mena, Ouachita River, and Cossatot River—this year’s program was another tremendous success. The Healthy Connections dental team, alongside students from the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (UA-Fort Smith) dental hygiene program, worked tirelessly to provide these essential services in a convenient and professional setting.

Why Dental Sealants Matter

Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions, yet it is largely preventable with proper care and early intervention. Dental sealants are a proven method for protecting young teeth against cavities, particularly on the chewing surfaces of molars where decay is most likely to develop. By applying these sealants early, children are less likely to experience dental problems that could lead to pain, infections, and costly treatments down the road.

Our dental experts emphasize the importance of regular dental checkups, preventive treatments, and good oral hygiene habits. By participating in this annual program, children not only receive crucial protection against cavities but also gain a greater understanding of how to maintain their dental health for years to come.

Thank You to Our Partners and Community

The success of this initiative would not be possible without the collaboration and dedication of many individuals. Healthy Connections extends our deepest gratitude to the UA-Fort Smith dental hygiene students who traveled to assist our team, providing professional care and hands-on support. We also thank the participating schools for recognizing the importance of preventive dental care and helping us reach children who need it most.

Most importantly, we are grateful to the parents who trusted us with their children’s dental health. Your commitment to ensuring your child receives preventive care plays a crucial role in maintaining their overall well-being.
