Q&A

What is Rheumatology?

Rheumatology is an internal medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases, autoimmune diseases and musculoskeletal conditions affecting the muscles, bones, and joints. These conditions can lead to pain, inflammation, swelling, deformity, stiffness, and mobility issues.

What are autoimmune conditions?

An autoimmune condition occurs when your immune system responds incorrectly to a perceived threat, such as being under-responsive or overactive. In both cases, the body’s ability to fight disease is compromised, damaging its own tissues and being vulnerable to infections. Autoimmune diseases often cause inflammation, swelling, and allergic responses.

What conditions do rheumatologists treat?

Some of the diseases and conditions commonly treated by rheumatologists include:

  • Chronic back pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gout
  • Tendinitis
  • Bursitis
  • Nerve impingements like sciatica or carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Lupus
  • Lyme disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sjogren’s syndrome

What symptoms might indicate a rheumatic disease or condition?

Pain and stiffness are the primary symptoms that bring patients to a rheumatologist. Pain is widely experienced, but when your pain doesn’t resolve and you experience severe, persistent pain for more than a few days, you should seek medical attention. The symptoms of rheumatic diseases can change or evolve over time and many of the symptoms can indicate a variety of diseases. Dr. Mohammed and her team are dedicated to helping you to find pain relief while identifying and diagnosing the underlying condition responsible for your discomfort.

How are rheumatic and autoimmune diseases diagnosed?

Dr. Mohammed and her team perform comprehensive diagnostic exams to get to the root of your condition. In addition to a physical exam and an in-depth discussion about your symptoms, lifestyle, and overall well-being, a series of diagnostic tests will be completed. These tests may include blood panels, x-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasounds. It may take more than one visit for your condition to be diagnosed. Dr. Mohammed works diligently to diagnose and treat all her patients even when it takes a couple of visits and tests to get to the root of the issue.

How does Dr. Mohammed treat rheumatic diseases?

The specific treatment will depend on your diagnosis. In general, rheumatic and autoimmune diseases are treated with a combination of medication and lifestyle adjustments to exercise, diet, stress management, and sleep. You will receive counseling and support to make sustainable changes and to deal with some of the mental and emotional strains that can accompany rheumatic diseases and their symptoms.
